Quand on voit avec quelle simplicité les femmes se coiffent aujourd'hui, on a peine à comprendre comment, sur la fin du XVIII^e siècle, elles avaient été amenées à donner à leur coiffure des formes si extraordinaires et si démesurées. L'art d'un perruquier ordinaire ne leur suffisait plus, et il fallait y joindre celui du serrurier pour ajuster tous les ressorts de ces machines énormes qu'elles portaient sur la tête...
